Upcoming Meeting Reminder

From Jim Sullivan:

Just a quick word to let everyone know that the Humanist Society of Gainesville will hold their monthly meeting next Wednesday, July 18, 2012, in the Social Hall of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship at 4225 N.W. 34th Street. It’s just a very short distance north of 39th Avenue on 34th Street on the right. The meeting will begin at 7:00 pm.

At this meeting some of us atheists, freethinkers, nonbelievers, agnostics, humanists, whatever we choose to call ourselves, will be talking about how we came to be who we are today. Everything will be voluntary, no one will be called on, asked, or required to speak. However, given who we are, I do not anticipate that we will suffer for lack of anyone willing to talk about their life experiences. Particularly in the U.S., our ranks are growing but we are still a minority and our understanding and support of one another is important. Please try to limit your remarks to 5 minutes or less so we have time for many to speak.

If time permits, we will be testing out our new audio visual equipment and will get to see a very short roundtable discussion featuring “the four horseman of the apocalypse” Dan Dennett, Christopher Hitchens, Sam Harris, and Richard Dawkins. They will be talking about the reactions to their books and the public response to their debates and presentations and the video we will be using is less than 10 minutes long.

Don’t forget that at every meeting we will be accepting donations of non-perishable food items suitable for the backpacks of school children. We are passing these items along to the Food4Kids Backpack Program which is continuing through the summer, since these local families in need of this assistance do actually need to continue to eat year-round. We thank you for all the food you have contributed to date. Let’s just keep it up.

Hope to see you Wednesday evening,

Jim Sullivan
President
